BRING HOPE TO REFUGEES LIVING IN THE MIDDLE EAST.
Middle East Refugee Relief
English is an open door for hope and healing.
Middle East Refugee Relief is located in some of the largest refugee camps in the Middle East, with teaching opportunities serving Syrian and Yazidi refugees. Their ministry began around 2013 when a group began serving in one of these camps. They were asked by the local government to open a safe house for women who had escaped from ISIS, which led them to create a facility where trained counselors and support staff can work closely with these groups of women. At this moment, there are many open doors to serve those who live in the camps through English classes and other ministries.
Middle East Refugee Relief has started English classes for young people (13-18 years old). Many of these young people are orphans as a result of ISIS who killed their parents, and some of these kids even saw their parents killed which intensifies their pain. As more teachers come, Middle East Refugee Relief would like to pioneer new English classes. These new classes would be provided to adults (primarily widows and survivors) as well as kids by expanding the current kid’s class curriculum (ages 6-12) to include English.
As a teacher, you will get immersed into the culture as you become closely connected with families in the camps. You will often have an invitation to go and have a meal and talk about Western life. Many of our teachers have had the opportunity to share their faith in these type of settings.
If you would like to get a look and feel for life inside these camps and the needs of the refugees living there, we highly recommend the documentary Don’t Forget Them, which follows several volunteers and the work they are doing to bring hope through education, health services, and other forms of care.
In 2019, I taught English in a refugee camp with Middle East Refugee Relief. I loved my students, and seeing their willingness to continue to learn and grow after the horrors and hardships they had been through was inspiring. It was a privilege to help them in any way I could along that journey and TESOL gave me the tools to do so.
